Materials Handling Equipment for Safer Freight

A damaged pallet load, leaking drum or shifting export consignment can create costs well beyond the value of the product itself. The right materials handling equipment helps prevent those problems before goods leave the warehouse, while making storage, picking and loading more efficient for the team handling them.

For Australian businesses moving product through warehouses, production sites, farms, distribution centres and ports, selection should start with the load and the movement involved. A cheaper item that does not suit the weight, dimensions or transport conditions can quickly become the more expensive choice.

Materials handling equipment starts with the load

Before comparing products, define what needs to be stored, lifted, stacked or secured. Weight is the first figure, but it is not the only one. Load shape, centre of gravity, surface condition, stacking height, handling method and trip length all affect whether a pallet, bin, container or cargo restraint solution is suitable.

A regular carton load has different requirements from bulk agricultural produce, liquids, bagged materials or irregular manufactured components. For example, loose or moisture-sensitive goods may need containment rather than a standard pallet. A high-value export load may need additional void fill or bracing within the container, even when the goods are already palletised.

It also pays to separate static storage requirements from transport requirements. Equipment that performs well on a warehouse floor may not be the best option for repeated forklift handling, long road transport or sea freight. The operating environment matters: cold rooms, wet areas, outdoor yards, dusty sites and food-related applications can all influence the preferred material and design.

Choose equipment for the handling task

Materials handling equipment works best when each product has a clear job. Trying to use one format for every load can create handling delays, unstable stacks and unnecessary product damage.

Pallets for unit loads and repeat movement

Pallets provide a stable base for goods that need to be moved by forklift or pallet jack. Compressed wood pallets are a practical option for many export and one-way shipping applications because they are space-efficient, consistent in size and generally suitable for international freight requirements. Their light weight can also help where freight charges are based on total shipment weight.

Plastic pallets are often better suited to closed-loop supply chains, wash-down areas, food processing environments and operations that need a durable, reusable platform. They do not absorb moisture in the way timber can, and their consistent dimensions support predictable racking and handling. The trade-off is upfront cost. Reusability only delivers value if the pallets are recovered, maintained and kept in service for enough cycles.

When selecting a pallet, check its dynamic load rating, static load rating and racking capacity. These are not interchangeable figures. A pallet may safely hold a heavy stationary load on the floor but have a much lower capacity when raised by forklift or supported in warehouse racking.

Pallet bins for bulk storage and picking

Plastic pallet bins suit operations storing loose, bulky or awkward items that are not easily cartonised. They are commonly used for agricultural produce, components, returns, manufacturing materials and warehouse picking. Their forklift entry and stackable format can reduce double handling compared with using individual cartons or loose storage cages.

The right bin depends on internal dimensions, volume, wall design and drainage needs. Solid-wall bins are useful where material containment is the priority. Ventilated bins can be the better choice for produce or goods that require airflow. If bins will be stacked while loaded, confirm the load rating at the intended stack height rather than relying on an empty-bin stacking figure.

IBC containers for bulk liquids

Intermediate bulk containers, commonly known as IBCs, are designed for storing and transporting compatible liquids and semi-liquids in commercial volumes. They can improve handling efficiency by consolidating product into a forklift-accessible unit rather than multiple smaller drums or containers.

Compatibility is critical. The container, valve, cap and seals must suit the product being stored, including its chemical properties and temperature range. Businesses moving regulated goods also need to confirm that the chosen IBC and their handling process meet relevant transport, storage and workplace requirements. An IBC should never be selected on capacity alone.

Plan where it will be filled, stored and emptied. Access to the outlet valve, spill controls, bunding requirements and forklift clearance all affect day-to-day usability. A container that is difficult to decant safely can slow production and increase the chance of loss or contamination.

Dunnage bags for stabilising freight

Palletisation does not automatically stop a load from moving inside a shipping container, rail wagon or truck. Gaps between freight can allow products to shift during braking, cornering, vibration and rough handling. Dunnage bags are used to fill those voids and apply controlled pressure between load faces.

They are particularly useful when load sizes vary or when there is insufficient space to build a tightly packed block. Correct placement matters. The bag needs firm surfaces on both sides and should support the load without being exposed to sharp edges or overinflation. It is a freight restraint measure, not a substitute for a stable base, sound packaging or suitable load restraint planning.

Check the conditions beyond the warehouse

The point where goods are packed is only one part of the journey. Equipment may be exposed to forklifts, loading docks, road vibration, container condensation, changing temperatures and multiple handling points. A product that looks suitable in a clean warehouse can fail when those conditions are not considered.

For export freight, consider whether the pallet type, load dimensions and cargo protection method align with the destination and shipping process. Oversized pallet loads can waste container space or prevent efficient block stowage. Loads that sit too high may be difficult to secure or prone to contact with container roofs and doors. Moisture risk may require a different packaging approach from impact risk.

For reusable equipment, assess the return path as well. Plastic pallets and pallet bins can be an economical choice in a controlled network, but their value reduces when assets are lost, damaged or retained by customers. In a one-way freight model, compressed wood pallets or other purpose-selected export solutions may offer better overall cost control.

Look at total handling cost, not unit price

Purchase price is visible, but it is only part of the cost. The more useful calculation includes labour, storage density, damage rates, transport utilisation, replacement frequency and disposal or recovery costs.

A pallet with consistent dimensions may improve racking use and reduce loading delays. A bin that allows safe stacking can increase available floor space. A correctly selected dunnage bag can prevent a single damaged export shipment that would otherwise cost far more than the restraint product. These gains are often where specialised equipment earns its place.

That said, more durable is not always better. If a product is only used once, paying for a long service life may not make commercial sense. If a warehouse is handling very heavy loads every day, buying at the bottom end of the specification can lead to breakage, downtime and safety concerns. The right choice depends on use frequency, load profile and how well the item fits the operation.

Specify clearly when purchasing

Clear purchasing specifications reduce the risk of receiving equipment that looks right but does not perform as required. Include dimensions, load capacity, material, intended use, handling method and any relevant compliance or hygiene needs. Where products will interface with racking, forklifts, conveyors or shipping containers, include those constraints too.

The best materials handling equipment is rarely the most complicated option. It is the equipment that matches the load, survives the handling cycle and helps goods arrive in the same condition they left.
