For Australian operations, the right equipment is rarely about buying the cheapest unit available. It is about matching load type, handling method, storage conditions and freight requirements so products arrive in usable condition and staff can work safely. A pallet that does not suit a racking system, or a container that cannot be cleaned properly between uses, creates costs that show up later as delays, damage and avoidable replacement purchases.

MHE is a broad term. It can include lifting equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks, as well as the pallets, bins, containers and cargo restraint products that support the load itself. For a warehouse or freight operation, these components need to work together. The forklift may move the load, but the pallet determines how it is supported. The container may hold the product, but the dunnage determines whether it stays stable through transport.

For many businesses, the most relevant materials handling products fall into four practical groups: load platforms, bulk storage containers, reusable pallet bins and freight protection equipment. Each has a different job, and selecting one usually affects the choice of the others.

Pallets provide a stable base for handling, storage and transport. Plastic pallet bins contain loose, irregular or returnable stock. Intermediate bulk containers, commonly called IBCs, are used for storing and moving compatible liquid or bulk materials. Dunnage bags fill voids inside freight containers, rail wagons or trailers to reduce load movement in transit.

The right combination depends on what is being handled and where it is going. A domestic warehouse transfer has different demands from a containerised export shipment exposed to long transit times, moisture changes and multiple handling points.

Start With the Load, Not the Product Category

The most useful buying question is not, “Which pallet is best?” It is, “What must this load withstand?” Start with the product weight, dimensions, shape, stacking needs and point of use. Then consider whether the load will be handled by forklift, pallet jack, conveyor or manual picking equipment.

Static load capacity is only part of the picture. A pallet carrying stock on a warehouse floor is under different stress from one being lifted, moved across a dock, placed in racking or secured in a shipping container. Dynamic capacity, racking suitability and fork entry design all matter. A product may have an acceptable weight rating but still be unsuitable for the way it is handled on site.

For goods that are difficult to stack or likely to spill, a pallet bin can improve both containment and picking efficiency. Ventilated bins may suit produce or items that require airflow, while solid-wall bins are often better for smaller components, powders in sealed packaging or materials that need greater protection from dust and debris. Consider whether the bins need lids, drainage, forklift access, stackability or compatibility with existing storage locations.

Where liquids or bulk materials are involved, check the compatibility of the IBC and its fittings with the product being stored. Capacity is only one specification. The closure, outlet configuration, cage condition, handling access and any applicable transport or workplace requirements also need to suit the task.

Choosing Pallets for Handling and Freight

Pallet choice can affect handling speed, product damage, hygiene requirements and freight costs. Compressed wood pallets are a practical option where consistent dimensions, lower tare weight and export suitability are priorities. Their nestable design can also reduce the space required for empty pallet storage.

Plastic pallets are often selected for reuse, cleanability and resistance to moisture. They can suit food-related operations, pharmaceutical supply chains, cold storage and closed-loop distribution systems, depending on the product specification and site requirements. They do, however, need to be selected for the intended load and storage arrangement. Not every plastic pallet is designed for high racking loads or heavy point loading.

Timber-style handling habits should not automatically be applied to every pallet type. Fork tines should be set correctly, loads should be centred, and overhang should be controlled. Excessive overhang leaves cartons exposed to impact and can make stretch-wrapped loads less stable. If a load routinely needs more wrap, corner protection or rework than expected, the pallet footprint may be wrong for the carton configuration.

For export, pallet selection should also account for the receiving country, freight mode and the condition in which the load will travel. A pallet that performs well on a short local run may not be the best choice for extended container transport or repeated cross-docking.

Storage Bins and IBCs Need a Clear Handling Plan

Bulk containers help organise inventory, but only when the handling process is defined before they arrive on site. Measure the available floor space, racking bays, aisle widths and door clearances. Confirm the maximum stack height and ensure the chosen unit can be safely accessed by the equipment operators actually use.

Plastic pallet bins are often a sound choice for agricultural products, manufacturing parts, recycled materials and warehouse stock that needs to be held in volume. Their value comes from repeat use and consistent handling, rather than a one-off storage fix. If bins are moved between sites, shared with suppliers or used for returns, clear identification and a simple inspection process can prevent losses and unsuitable units being put back into service.

IBCs require the same discipline. Place them on an appropriate level surface, keep access to valves clear and protect them from forklift contact. If an IBC is being decanted, staff need a practical way to manage drips, spills and connection changes. The safest setup is usually the one that reduces unnecessary handling and makes the correct action obvious.

Freight Protection Is Part of Materials Handling

A correctly palletised load can still move during transport. This is particularly common when a shipping container has void space between pallet rows, when cartons are not tightly unitised, or when mixed loads settle during a long journey. Freight protection products address that movement before it becomes damage, contamination or a difficult unload at destination.

Dunnage bags are designed to fill gaps and provide pressure between cargo units. They are useful for stabilising palletised freight in containers, rail freight and trailers, but they are not a substitute for sound load planning. They work best when the load is already correctly distributed, blocked and braced where required.

Use the appropriate bag size for the void, place it where it can provide even support and inflate it according to the product instructions. A bag that is too small for the gap may not restrain the cargo effectively. One that is overinflated or pressed against sharp edges can fail. Where loads have unusual shapes, heavy individual units or high-value cargo, the restraint plan may need additional measures beyond dunnage alone.

Build a Specification Before Requesting Prices

Procurement becomes faster when the requirement is clear. Before comparing products or seeking a bulk quote, document the key operating details: load weight, external dimensions, required quantity, storage method, handling equipment, reuse cycle, delivery location and any hygiene, export or chemical compatibility requirements.

This prevents a common problem in industrial purchasing: comparing unit prices for products that do not deliver the same service life or operational fit. A lower-cost pallet may be suitable for a one-way shipment, while a higher-priced reusable pallet may make better commercial sense in a closed distribution loop. The answer depends on loss rates, return logistics, cleaning needs and how often the equipment will be handled.

It is also worth allowing for stock continuity. If a particular pallet, bin or dunnage format is central to daily operations, buying only enough for the immediate job can expose the business to supply interruptions. Holding a sensible working quantity, particularly for repeat dispatch lines or seasonal demand, supports more predictable warehouse planning.

Inspect Equipment as It Moves Through the Operation

Materials handling equipment does not need a complicated maintenance programme to deliver better results, but it does need routine checks. Inspect pallets for damage, contamination, distortion and compromised deck surfaces. Check bins for cracks, damaged feet and worn fork-entry areas. Review IBCs for leaks, damaged valves, deteriorated cages and unreadable labels where identification is required.

Remove unsuitable equipment from service promptly. Continuing to use a damaged pallet or bin because it is still technically usable can create a larger issue when it fails under load. Staff should also know the load limits and intended application of each item. Clear site procedures are more effective than relying on assumptions made during a busy shift.

The best materials handling setup is one your team can repeat without workarounds. Specify equipment around the real load, the actual handling path and the conditions of freight, then review performance after the first shipment or storage cycle.
