A warehouse can have the right forklift and still lose time, stock and margin through poor unit loads. The practical material handling equipment list starts with the items that carry, contain, store and stabilise goods from receival through to dispatch. For Australian operators, the right mix depends on product weight, handling method, storage layout, transport conditions and how often equipment is reused.

The aim is not to buy every item available. It is to specify equipment that removes a known handling or freight risk without creating unnecessary cost, wasted space or extra manual handling.

What material handling equipment covers

Material handling equipment is often grouped into four functional areas: storage, movement, load containment and freight protection. A pallet may sit across all four. It supports stock in storage, allows forklift movement, creates a transport unit and, when correctly loaded, helps protect goods in transit.

This broad definition matters because a handling issue is rarely isolated. A pallet that is unsuitable for a damp export environment can fail before the freight leaves the warehouse. A bin with poor internal access may slow picking. An unstable load can create a safety issue at the loading dock and a damage claim at the destination.

For many operations, the most frequently purchased equipment is not powered plant. It is the repeat-use and consumable equipment around it: pallets, pallet bins, IBC containers, dunnage bags, protective packaging and load restraint components. These products determine whether forklifts, pallet jacks, racking and transport vehicles can operate efficiently.

Material handling equipment list for practical operations

The following material handling equipment list covers common warehouse, manufacturing, agriculture, export and freight applications. Not every site requires every category, but each solves a distinct operational problem.

Pallets

Pallets form the base of most unit loads. They enable mechanical handling, improve floor and rack organisation, and create a standard footprint for transport planning. The correct pallet is determined by load weight, load distribution, fork entry, racking requirements, hygiene needs and the destination.

Plastic pallets are suited to businesses that need durable, consistent and moisture-resistant platforms. They are commonly used in closed-loop supply chains, food-related environments and sites where easy cleaning is a priority. Their higher upfront cost can be justified where pallets are recovered and reused regularly.

Compressed wood pallets are a practical option for export and one-way freight. Their nestable design can reduce storage space when empty, and their consistent dimensions assist container loading. They should still be selected against the actual load rating and handling conditions rather than on footprint alone.

Timber pallets remain widely used, particularly where local availability and repairability are priorities. For export freight, ensure the pallet treatment and documentation requirements match the destination and carrier requirements. The cheapest pallet is not always the lowest-cost option once breakage, rejected freight or lost loading time are considered.

Plastic pallet bins and bulk containers

Pallet bins combine a standard pallet footprint with high-volume containment. They are useful for loose components, agricultural produce, recycled materials, manufactured parts and stock that cannot be safely stacked as cartons. Rigid walls help contain product, while forklift pockets allow movement without repacking.

When selecting a pallet bin, check external dimensions, internal capacity, tare weight, static and dynamic load capacity, drainage requirements and whether the bins will be stacked. A bin that fits a rack bay but cannot be safely retrieved at its working load is not a suitable storage solution.

Collapsible bulk containers can reduce return-freight and empty-storage costs. Fixed-wall bins generally provide more immediate readiness and may suit rougher or higher-turnover applications. The better choice depends on the cost of reverse logistics, not simply the purchase price.

IBC containers

Intermediate bulk containers, commonly called IBCs, are used to store and move bulk liquids and some flowable products. They are widely used in manufacturing, agriculture, chemical handling, cleaning products and industrial processing.

The key requirement is product compatibility. Confirm that the inner bottle, valve, gasket and outer cage are suitable for the material being stored. Consider filling method, dispensing requirements, contamination control, exposure to sunlight and whether the IBC will be moved full, stored in a bunded area or shipped by road.

An IBC should not be treated as a generic liquid container. Hazardous goods, food-grade applications and regulated products can have specific packaging, labelling, segregation and transport obligations. Match the container specification to the product and obtain the required advice before filling or dispatching regulated goods.

Pallet jacks, forklifts and lifting attachments

Pallet jacks and forklifts are the movement equipment that turns a palletised load into a workable warehouse unit. Manual pallet jacks suit short, level travel distances and lower movement volumes. Electric pallet jacks can reduce operator effort and increase productivity where loads travel further or more frequently.

Forklifts provide greater lift height, reach and load capability, but they also require suitable aisles, floor capacity, operator training and maintenance. The truck capacity plate must be read in conjunction with the actual load centre, lift height and any attachment being used. A forklift rated for a certain weight may have a lower effective capacity once a long load, extended forks or attachment changes the load centre.

Attachments such as slippers, fork extensions, drum handlers and jibs can solve specific tasks, but they must be compatible with the forklift and approved for the intended use. Improvised attachments and overloaded forks create avoidable risks.

Racking, shelving and stillages

Racking and shelving hold goods between handling stages. Select storage equipment around the load, not the other way around. Cartons, pallets, long products, drums and irregular components all place different demands on the storage system.

Pallet racking suits standardised pallet loads and higher-density vertical storage. Longspan shelving is often better for hand-picked cartons and components. Stillages are useful for goods that need repeatable containment but do not suit conventional cartons or pallet bins, such as fabricated parts, long lengths or awkward assemblies.

Storage capacity is only useful when stock remains accessible. Consider pick frequency, stock rotation, safe loading clearances, beam ratings, aisle width and protection from forklift impact. Clearly displayed load ratings and routine inspections are part of the equipment requirement, not an optional extra.

Conveyors and dock equipment

Conveyors reduce repeated carrying and can improve flow in dispatch, manufacturing and sortation areas. They are most effective where the product size, travel path and volume are reasonably consistent. For low-volume or frequently changing work, a conveyor may add complexity without delivering enough benefit.

Dock plates, dock levellers, wheel chocks and loading ramps support the transfer between warehouse and vehicle. These items are easy to overlook until loading becomes a bottleneck. Check the rated capacity, gradient, vehicle interface and surface condition, particularly where pallet jacks are used across the dock transition.

Dunnage bags and freight protection

A stable pallet does not automatically mean stable freight. Dunnage bags fill voids between loads in containers, rail wagons and road freight, reducing movement that can lead to crushed cartons, shifted pallets and damaged product. They are particularly useful when mixed loads or uneven package sizes leave gaps that cannot be eliminated through better pallet configuration.

Dunnage bags work alongside sound loading practice. They do not replace adequate pallet strength, stretch wrap, strapping, blocking, bracing or proper weight distribution. Select the bag size and performance level for the void and transport conditions, then ensure it can be inflated safely and positioned where it will control movement rather than create a pressure point.

Other protective items may include edge protection, slip sheets, load restraint, protective covers and void fill. The correct combination depends on whether the main risk is compression, vibration, moisture, abrasion or load shift.

How to select equipment without over-specifying

Start with the load. Record its dimensions, maximum weight, centre of gravity, fragility, packaging type and whether it is uniform or variable. Then map its path through the operation: receival, put-away, storage, picking, staging, loading, transport and return if applicable.

Next, identify the constraint. It may be a narrow aisle, wet conditions, a container height limit, an export requirement, an unstable carton stack or a lack of empty-pallet storage. This is where specification becomes commercially useful. Buying a heavier-duty item than required can tie up capital and reduce payload. Buying too light a product can cause damage, rehandling and downtime.

Check compatibility across the system. Pallet dimensions need to work with racking, forklift forks, pallet jacks, containers and vehicle loading plans. Bins need to stack safely at their real working weight. IBC outlets need to suit dispensing equipment. Freight protection needs to fit the available void and loading method.

Finally, consider lifecycle cost. Reusable equipment may deliver better value in a controlled return loop, while export and one-way shipments often favour products that are economical, space-efficient and suitable for the destination. Bulk purchasing can also improve unit cost, provided storage space and usage rates support the order quantity.

The most useful equipment is the equipment your team can use correctly every shift. Specify to the load, confirm the handling path and choose products that support safe, repeatable movement from warehouse floor to final delivery.
