How to Choose Dunnage Bags for Containers Safely

A container can look fully packed at dispatch and still allow enough movement for cartons, drums or palletised goods to shift during braking, cornering, rail handling and sea transit. Dunnage bags for containers fill those load voids, applying controlled lateral pressure between stable cargo stacks to limit movement before it becomes damage.
For exporters, freight forwarders and warehouse teams, the issue is not simply whether a bag fits in the gap. The bag must suit the void size, the cargo weight, the transport mode and the load restraint plan. A poorly selected or incorrectly inflated bag can rupture, allow load movement or place excessive pressure on unsuitable cargo.
What dunnage bags do inside a container
Dunnage bags are inflatable load-securing products placed in gaps between cargo units. Once inflated, they expand to occupy the void and help prevent adjacent loads from moving sideways. They are commonly used in shipping containers, road trailers, rail wagons and intermodal freight.
Their purpose is to stabilise a load, not to correct an unstable one. If pallets are poorly built, drums are unsecured, cartons are crushed, or a cargo stack is already leaning, an air bag will not make the shipment safe. The container must be loaded with sound, compatible freight and supported by an appropriate restraint method.
In practical terms, dunnage bags are most effective where two stable faces can bear against the inflated bag. This may be between pallet loads, between a load and a container wall where the application allows it, or between different cargo blocks that are properly restrained in other directions. They reduce the opportunity for cargo to gain momentum in transit.
Start with the void, not the bag
The most common selection mistake is choosing a bag based on the container size rather than the actual void. Measure the gap after the cargo has been packed, including any variation from uneven pallet faces, overhanging cartons or damaged packaging.
A dunnage bag should fill the available space efficiently without being stretched beyond its intended working range. Oversized bags can balloon into irregular spaces and create concentrated pressure points. Undersized bags may only touch the load in a small area, leaving room for movement after the container starts travelling.
The shape of the void matters as much as its width. A clean, rectangular gap between two square pallet faces gives the bag broad, even support. A narrow V-shaped void, a gap created by unstable stacks, or an opening around protruding pallet corners gives much less reliable contact. In those cases, review the loading arrangement before relying on an inflatable restraint.
Check the bearing surfaces
The cargo contacting the bag needs sufficient strength to take the inflation pressure. Strong, unitised pallet loads are generally more suitable than soft cartons, loosely wrapped goods or fragile packaged products. Sharp edges, exposed timber, protruding nails and damaged pallet boards can damage the outer layer of a bag or create a localised failure point.
Use suitable protection where required, such as load boards or edge protection, provided this is compatible with the restraint plan. The goal is a broad, firm contact area. Do not place a bag directly against an exposed sharp edge and assume the outer sleeve will compensate for poor preparation.
Select the right bag construction and strength
Dunnage bags are supplied in different materials, dimensions and performance grades. Paper bags are often used for dry freight applications where cost-effective void filling is required. Woven polypropylene bags offer greater resistance to moisture and abrasion, making them a practical option for demanding transport environments and repeat commercial use where the product specification permits it.
The right choice depends on the shipment. Consider cargo mass, expected handling, route conditions, exposure to moisture, container type and whether the bag is intended for a single journey or a defined reuse program. Sea freight may involve longer transit times, vessel movement and humidity changes. Road and rail movements can involve repeated acceleration, braking and shunting forces.
Do not treat all bags as interchangeable. Check the supplier's stated dimensions, recommended void range, inflation requirements and load restraint rating. If a shipment is subject to a customer specification, carrier rule, export protocol or internal cargo-securing procedure, confirm that the selected bag meets those requirements before packing begins.
Inflation pressure is not a guess
A bag must be inflated using the correct inflator and to the pressure specified for that product and application. Under-inflation leaves the void partially open and can allow the load to settle. Over-inflation can damage the bag, crush packaging or exert pressure beyond what the cargo faces can safely carry.
Use a calibrated gauge where the inflation system requires one. Follow the bag manufacturer's instructions for the valve, air supply and maximum inflation pressure. Compressed air systems should be controlled carefully, as high-volume air can inflate a bag faster than an operator can assess the load contact.
After inflation, inspect the bag position and the surrounding cargo. It should sit squarely in the void, make broad contact and remain clear of sharp objects. If the bag shifts upward, folds sharply or forces a pallet out of alignment, deflate it and correct the load arrangement.
Build dunnage bags into the full restraint plan
Containers are subject to forces in more than one direction. A dunnage bag generally controls lateral movement across a void. It does not automatically restrain cargo from moving forward, backwards, vertically or through an open doorway.
A proper container loading plan may also require blocking, bracing, lashing, friction materials, load bars, timber, rated restraints or suitable pallet configuration. The correct combination depends on cargo type, weight distribution and the direction of expected movement. Heavy machinery, drums, steel products and uneven loads often need more than air-filled void protection.
Weight distribution also matters. Keep the load balanced, avoid excessive point loading and position heavy goods in line with the container's loading limits and the transport requirements. A dunnage bag cannot resolve a poor centre of gravity or compensate for cargo that has been loaded above the container's safe capacity.
For export cargo, document the loading process where required. Photos of the load before the doors are closed can assist with internal quality control and provide useful evidence if a freight damage claim is later investigated.
A practical container loading check
Before dispatch, the loader or supervisor should confirm the following points:
- The cargo is stable, properly palletised or packaged, and free from damaged units that could collapse under pressure.
- The void has been measured and the selected bag is suitable for its width, height and contact area.
- The bag is protected from sharp edges, moisture risks and abrasion points that could affect performance.
- Inflation has been completed to the product specification using the correct equipment.
- Other directions of load movement are controlled through the broader cargo restraint plan.
- The container doors close without forcing against cargo, bags or loose packing materials.
When dunnage bags are not the right answer
Dunnage bags are effective for filling suitable voids, but there are situations where another restraint method is the better option. Very small gaps may be better managed with fixed dunnage or friction material. Large, irregular openings may need blocking and bracing before a bag can be used safely. Cargo with weak outer packaging may require load boards, stronger unitisation or a different pallet configuration.
They should also not be used as a substitute for securing dangerous goods, heavy items or freight with specific regulatory requirements. For these loads, follow the applicable transport rules, cargo restraint guidance, container packing requirements and product documentation. If there is uncertainty, obtain advice before the container is sealed.
Make selection consistent across repeat loads
For regular freight lanes, standardising the bag size and loading method can reduce packing time and purchasing errors. Record the common pallet dimensions, typical voids, cargo weights and restraint components used for each container configuration. This gives warehouse teams a practical reference rather than requiring a fresh decision at every dispatch.
