Choosing Export Packing Supplies for Freight

Cargo damage is rarely caused by one dramatic event. More often, it starts with small gaps in a load, inadequate pallet support, shifting during transit or packaging that does not suit the freight method. Selecting the right export packing supplies is therefore a practical part of freight planning, not an afterthought once goods are ready to leave the warehouse.
For Australian exporters, freight forwarders and warehouse teams, packing decisions need to account for handling points, transport duration, container conditions and the nature of the product itself. A load moving by road to port, then by sea to an overseas destination, may be handled several times and exposed to vibration, compression, moisture and uneven load pressure. The materials used to pack, stabilise and support it must be suited to that journey.
What export packing supplies need to achieve
Export packing is about more than enclosing a product. The complete packing system needs to protect the goods, create a stable freight unit and allow safe, efficient handling through the supply chain. That includes warehouse loading, forklift movement, container packing, port handling and delivery at the other end.
The right approach depends on the goods being shipped. Heavy machinery components, packaged food products, agricultural goods, chemical containers and manufactured parts all have different handling and protection requirements. A pallet that performs well for light, dry cartons may not be suitable for dense loads, wet environments or long-term export storage.
A practical export packing system should address four areas:
- load support and weight distribution
- movement prevention within pallets, trucks and containers
- protection from compression, vibration and impact
- suitable handling for forklifts, pallet jacks and storage systems
Start with the freight unit, not the individual carton
A common packing mistake is assessing each carton or item in isolation. Export freight is handled as a unit load. That means the palletised load, crate, IBC or container arrangement needs to be considered as one system.
Start by confirming the total packed weight, dimensions and centre of gravity. Identify whether the product can be stacked and whether it has any overhang beyond the pallet footprint. Overhang increases the risk of crushed edges and makes loads more vulnerable when stored beside other freight. It can also create handling issues in tight warehouse locations and containers.
The pallet should match both the product and the intended movement. Compressed wood pallets are often a practical choice where consistent dimensions, export suitability and efficient storage are required. Their nestable design can reduce space consumption when empty, which is useful for businesses managing regular export volumes.
Plastic pallets may be better suited to operations requiring moisture resistance, easy cleaning or repeated use. They are commonly used where hygiene, durability and stable dimensions are priorities. The trade-off is that the right pallet choice is not always the lowest upfront cost. It should be assessed against load capacity, lifecycle, freight conditions and handling requirements.
For bulk liquids, powders or other compatible materials, IBC containers provide a purpose-built storage and transport format. However, they still need to be positioned and secured correctly for the transport mode. An IBC that is suitable for storing product is not automatically ready for every shipping environment without appropriate load restraint and freight planning.
Match protection to the transport risk
Road, sea and air freight create different risks. Export loads frequently encounter more than one, so packaging must suit the full route rather than only the first leg.
Road transport introduces vibration, braking forces and cornering movement. Freight may be transferred between vehicles or held at depots, which creates additional handling exposure. Sea freight adds long transit times, container movement and potential moisture concerns. Air freight may involve tighter dimensional limits and different weight considerations, making efficient but effective packing especially important.
Void management is one of the most effective ways to reduce movement in containers and enclosed freight spaces. If goods can move, they will. Small gaps can become larger under repeated vibration, allowing cartons, pallets or drums to lean and place pressure on adjacent cargo.
Dunnage bags are designed to fill voids between cargo and help prevent lateral movement. They are particularly useful for stabilising palletised freight within containers, rail wagons and trucks where gaps cannot be eliminated through loading layout alone. The correct size and placement matter. A bag should restrain freight across an appropriate contact area, not act as a substitute for suitable pallets, sound packaging or required load restraint methods.
Dunnage bags also need to be matched to the conditions of use. Load weight, gap size, freight configuration and transport duration all affect the required performance level. Over-inflation or poor placement can damage cartons, while undersized bags may not provide adequate support.
Select pallets for handling as well as export compliance
Pallet selection affects more than transit protection. It influences loading speed, racking suitability, forklift access, storage density and the consistency of outbound freight.
For export operations, timber packaging requirements should be checked against the destination country's import rules. Where timber pallets are used, treatment and marking requirements may apply. Compressed wood pallets can simplify this issue in many export applications because they are manufactured from processed material, but businesses should still confirm the requirements for their product, destination and shipping method before dispatch.
Load rating needs to be assessed in the real operating environment. A pallet's static capacity while sitting on a warehouse floor is different from its dynamic capacity when moved by forklift. Racking capacity may be different again. Procurement teams should confirm the intended load weight and whether the pallet will be transported, stacked, racked or stored for extended periods.
Plastic pallet bins can be a suitable option for heavy, loose or irregular goods that require containment. They can improve handling efficiency by keeping product consolidated and allowing forklift movement without repeated manual handling. In returnable supply chains, durable bins can also reduce the need for disposable secondary packaging. Their suitability still depends on the product, required volume, stacking arrangement and available warehouse space.
Build packing specifications that warehouse teams can follow
The best export packing supplies will not deliver consistent results if every shift packs freight differently. A clear packing specification helps standardise the process and gives warehouse staff a practical reference before goods leave site.
The specification does not need to be complicated. It should state the approved pallet type, maximum load weight and height, carton layout, overhang limits, wrapping or strapping requirements, void-fill method and any handling instructions. For export containers, it should also identify how the load is positioned and restrained.
Photographs or simple diagrams can be valuable for repeat shipments, particularly where products have unusual shapes or mixed pallet configurations. They reduce guesswork and make it easier to identify non-conforming loads before collection.
It is also worth reviewing packing specifications after a damage claim, change in freight route or change in product packaging. A packing method that worked for domestic pallet freight may need adjustment when the same item moves through a longer export supply chain.
Balance material cost against total freight risk
Lower-cost packing materials can appear attractive when measured only by unit price. The better commercial question is whether they reduce the total cost of moving goods. A damaged export shipment can involve replacement stock, rework, freight claims, customer disruption and delayed delivery. It can also tie up staff time across warehousing, customer service and procurement.
This does not mean every load requires the highest-specification product available. Overspecifying packaging adds avoidable cost and can reduce container utilisation. The aim is to select materials that are appropriate for the cargo and transport conditions.
For regular export programs, standardising on a small number of proven pallet, bin and cargo restraint formats can improve purchasing control and warehouse efficiency. It also makes bulk ordering easier and reduces the chance that unsuitable materials are used when stock is short.
