For exporters, pallet selection affects more than warehouse handling. A compressed wood pallets export program can reduce shipment weight, simplify timber compliance and improve container utilisation, provided the pallet matches the cargo, route and handling conditions. These pallets are purpose-built for one-way freight movements where consistency, hygiene and export readiness matter.

Compressed wood pallets, also called presswood or moulded wood pallets, are manufactured from dried wood fibre and resin under heat and pressure. The finished pallet is a single moulded unit rather than a nailed timber assembly. That construction gives exporters a practical alternative to conventional timber pallets, particularly for international consignments with clear weight and compliance requirements.

Why compressed wood pallets suit export freight

The main advantage is their status as a manufactured wood product. International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15, commonly known as ISPM 15, generally applies to solid wood packaging material such as timber pallets, crates and dunnage. Manufactured wood products are generally outside the standard because the production process uses heat, pressure and processed wood fibre.

This can remove the need for heat-treatment stamps that apply to conventional timber pallets. It also reduces the risk of a shipment being delayed because a timber pallet is unstamped, damaged or assessed as non-compliant at destination. However, exporters should still confirm the import rules for the destination country, the product being shipped and the requirements of their freight forwarder. Phytosanitary rules are only one part of export compliance.

Weight is the second major consideration. A compressed wood pallet is typically lighter than a comparable hardwood pallet. Across a single shipment, the difference may appear minor. Across regular airfreight movements, consolidated loads or high-volume container programs, pallet tare weight can materially affect freight cost and payload capacity.

Their moulded design also supports efficient storage. Many compressed wood pallet models nest inside one another when empty, allowing more pallets to be stored in a smaller warehouse footprint or returned in bulk where a return arrangement is worthwhile. For businesses running export packing lines, this can reduce the space tied up by empty pallet stock.

Export compliance is more than the pallet material

Using a manufactured pallet does not make every shipment automatically compliant. Exporters still need to manage the full freight task, including cargo restraint, labelling, dangerous goods requirements where applicable, export documentation and destination-country import controls.

For compressed wood pallets export shipments, the useful distinction is between the pallet itself and the load built on it. The pallet may not require ISPM 15 treatment, but solid timber used as dunnage, bracing or crate components can still fall under timber packaging rules. A compliant pallet does not solve a non-compliant timber brace inside the same container.

The condition of the pallet also matters. Export pallets should be dry, clean and free from contamination, loose material or visible damage. Food, beverage, pharmaceutical and other hygiene-sensitive supply chains may have additional standards for packaging cleanliness. If the product must be kept off the pallet deck or protected from dust and moisture, use an appropriate liner, slip sheet, bag or outer carton specification.

Before committing to a pallet type, confirm three points with the freight provider and overseas customer: the destination requirements, the maximum permitted pallet dimensions and the maximum loaded height or weight. These details determine whether a standard footprint will work or whether a different size is needed.

Selecting the right pallet for the load

A compressed wood pallet should be chosen by load case, not simply by its purchase price. The lowest-cost pallet can become expensive if it fails under a point load, is unsuitable for racking or creates rework at dispatch.

Start with the goods. Cartons with a flat, stable base spread their weight effectively across the pallet deck. Drums, machinery feet, narrow cartons and uneven packs create concentrated pressure points. These loads may require a stronger pallet design, a top board, a load-spreading sheet or a conventional timber or plastic pallet instead.

Next, consider how the loaded pallet will be handled. A pallet moved once by a forklift from packing area to container floor has a different duty cycle from one stored in high racking, transferred through several depots and handled by multiple forklifts. Compressed wood pallets are commonly suited to export and single-trip distribution, but their suitability depends on their stated load rating and the support provided beneath the pallet.

Static load, dynamic load and racking load are not interchangeable figures. Static load refers to weight supported while the pallet sits on a flat surface. Dynamic load applies while the pallet is being moved. Racking load is relevant when the pallet is supported only at its ends in warehouse racking. Buyers should use the supplier's rating for the actual handling environment, with a sensible safety margin for variable loads and rough freight handling.

Pallet footprint should match the shipping method and receiver's equipment. A pallet that fits efficiently in an Australian warehouse may not suit the preferred footprint for an overseas customer or a specific container loading plan. Check container internal dimensions, door clearance, pallet height and whether the consignment will be floor-loaded, block-stowed or placed in racking after arrival.

Build the pallet load for transport, not just dispatch

A good pallet cannot compensate for a poorly built load. The base layer should sit squarely on the deck, with no cartons overhanging the edges. Overhang increases the chance of crushed cartons, snagging during handling and reduced stability when the load is wrapped.

Keep weight centred and distribute it evenly. Heavy cartons belong low in the stack, while lighter goods can sit above them. Avoid creating a tall, narrow load unless the product and restraint method have been assessed for stability. The correct loaded height depends on carton strength, container use, forklift handling and the risk of movement during transport.

Stretch wrap, strapping and corner protection should be selected for the product rather than applied as a routine step. Stretch wrap provides containment, but it cannot make a badly stacked pallet stable. Strapping may be suitable for rigid, dense loads, while corner boards can protect cartons from strap pressure and help maintain stack shape. For cargo travelling in containers, dunnage bags and other restraint products may be needed to control gaps between palletised loads.

Moisture is another practical consideration. Compressed wood pallets are made for freight use, but they should not be treated as a substitute for moisture protection. If goods are sensitive to humidity, container condensation or wet ground handling, specify a pallet liner, sealed packaging or appropriate desiccant controls as part of the export pack design.

Where compressed wood pallets are not the best choice

Compressed pallets are not the right answer for every operation. A reusable closed-loop system, heavy industrial components, very high point loads or long-term warehouse racking may justify a heavy-duty plastic or timber pallet. Those applications can demand greater impact resistance, repairability or specific racking performance.

They are also less suitable where pallets are likely to remain exposed to repeated wet conditions. Their value is strongest when the freight movement is planned, the load is properly distributed and the pallet is used within its rating. For exporters sending packaged goods on a one-way journey, those conditions are common. For a high-abuse domestic distribution loop, a different pallet may deliver a lower cost per trip.

This is why total landed cost is more useful than unit price alone. Consider freight weight, storage space, treatment administration, handling damage, destination acceptance and the likelihood of pallet recovery. A pallet that costs slightly more at dispatch may still reduce the overall cost of exporting the load.

A practical purchasing checklist

Before ordering, document the pallet footprint, expected unit load weight, load distribution, loaded height, handling method and whether racking is involved. Confirm the pallet's dynamic and static ratings, then verify that the rating applies to the intended support conditions. If the pallet will move through several freight providers, allow for handling that may be less controlled than your own warehouse process.

For regular shipments, trial the pallet on a representative load before moving to volume supply. Check fork entry, carton edge support, wrapping performance and container packing efficiency. Photograph the final load configuration and retain the specification for dispatch staff. Consistency at the packing bench is one of the easiest ways to prevent avoidable freight damage.
