A damaged consignment, an unstable pallet load or a storage system that wastes floor space can add cost well beyond the price of the product itself. The best material handling equipment is the equipment that suits the load, the handling method, the storage environment and the transport leg without creating avoidable work for the warehouse or freight team.
For Australian operators, the right choice is rarely about buying the heaviest-duty option available. It is about matching specifications to the job: load capacity, dimensions, forklift access, hygiene requirements, export conditions and repeat-use expectations. A warehouse moving bagged goods locally has different requirements from an exporter securing machinery components in a container.
Start with the load and the workflow
Before selecting pallets, bins, containers or cargo restraint products, define what is actually being moved. Record the product weight, outer dimensions, stacking limits, moisture sensitivity and whether the goods are loose, bagged, boxed, drummed or irregularly shaped. These details determine whether the equipment needs containment, support, separation or load stabilisation.
The workflow matters just as much. Consider where goods are received, how they are picked, whether they are stored in racking, how often they are handled and how they leave the site. Equipment that works well at the packing bench may be inefficient once it reaches a forklift, pallet racking or a shipping container.
A practical review should also account for the equipment already in use. Fork tine spacing, racking beam dimensions, pallet jacks, conveyor systems and vehicle restraints can all limit which products are suitable. Buying a pallet that does not work with existing handling equipment can quickly create delays and manual handling risks.

There is no single best product category for every site. The most useful equipment is selected according to the task it performs in the supply chain.
Pallets for transport, storage and export
Pallets remain the base of most warehouse and freight operations because they standardise handling. The choice between plastic pallets and compressed wood pallets depends on the load, destination and operating conditions.
Plastic pallets are well suited to operations that need a durable, consistent platform that is resistant to moisture and easy to clean. They can be a sound option for food-related supply chains, wet environments, closed-loop systems and businesses that reuse pallets regularly. Their consistent dimensions can also support reliable use in racking and automated or semi-automated handling environments.
Compressed wood pallets are often a practical choice for export and one-way freight. They are lightweight, nestable and space-efficient when stored empty. For exporters, they can simplify pallet supply where timber treatment requirements would otherwise need to be considered. The trade-off is that they should be selected carefully for load rating and handling conditions, particularly where loads are heavily concentrated or likely to be exposed to prolonged moisture.
For either pallet type, assess the dynamic load, static load and racking load separately. A pallet may support a substantial load on the floor but have a lower safe capacity when lifted or stored across rack beams. That distinction is critical when purchasing for high-bay storage.
Plastic pallet bins for bulk goods
Plastic pallet bins provide containment where a standard pallet and stretch wrap are not enough. They are commonly used for agricultural produce, components, recycled materials, manufacturing offcuts and bulk-picked stock. A bin keeps loose goods contained while allowing forklift handling and stackable storage.
When comparing bins, focus on internal capacity, wall design, base construction and stackability. Vented bins are suitable where airflow is required, while solid-wall bins are better for small parts, granular materials or goods that need more protection from dust and debris. If bins need to be moved regularly, confirm that the base suits the forklifts and pallet jacks used on site.
Returnable bins can reduce packaging waste and improve presentation between sites, but they require a reliable collection and return process. For a one-way distribution model, the initial investment may not provide the same value as it would in a closed supply chain.
IBC containers for liquids and bulk materials
Intermediate bulk containers, commonly known as IBCs, are designed for storing and transporting compatible liquids and certain bulk materials. They are widely used across manufacturing, agriculture, chemical handling and industrial processing because they provide substantial capacity in a forklift-compatible format.
An IBC should never be selected on volume alone. Confirm chemical compatibility, valve configuration, filling and dispensing requirements, site storage conditions and applicable transport obligations. The contents may require additional controls such as bunding, labelling, segregation or dangerous goods documentation.
Consider whether a new IBC, a reconditioned option or a specialised configuration is appropriate for the operation. Product integrity and compliance requirements should drive the decision. Where material purity is critical, a container with an uncertain history may not be suitable.
Dunnage bags for cargo restraint
Dunnage bags fill voids between palletised freight, crates or other loads during transport. Once inflated correctly, they help limit load movement in containers, rail wagons and road freight. They are particularly useful where a load cannot be packed tightly from wall to wall.
They are not a substitute for proper palletisation, load distribution or restraint planning. A dunnage bag performs best when the surrounding goods have sufficient strength to support the inflation pressure and the void is suitable for the bag size. Sharp edges, unstable stacks and weak cartons can compromise the result.
For export freight, select bags with the appropriate strength rating for the transport mode and load weight. The inflation equipment, valve type and available compressed air source should also be considered before packing day. A compatible bag is only useful if the team can inflate it efficiently and correctly at the point of loading.
Assess durability against replacement cost
Higher initial cost can be justified when equipment is reused frequently, exposed to rough handling or needed for a long service life. Plastic pallets and pallet bins, for example, may deliver better value over time in a controlled returnable system than lower-cost disposable alternatives.
However, durability should not be treated as an automatic purchasing rule. For one-way export loads, equipment that is easy to store, competitively priced and suitable for the destination may be the more commercial choice. The best buying decision considers total cost across purchasing, storage, handling, loss, breakage and replacement.
Also consider what happens when equipment is damaged. A product that can be easily inspected, cleaned and removed from service is easier to manage than one that fails without warning. Set clear internal checks for cracked bins, damaged pallet decks, broken runners, leaking valves and worn cargo restraint equipment.
Check dimensions before placing a bulk order
Dimensional errors are among the most expensive preventable problems in materials handling. Measure racking, doorways, container openings, vehicle decks and available storage locations before ordering. Check loaded height as well as footprint, particularly where pallets are double-stacked or stored under sprinkler systems.
The following specifications should be confirmed against the intended application:
- Safe working load in dynamic, static and racking conditions
- External and internal dimensions, including overall loaded height
- Forklift and pallet-jack entry points
- Stackability, nesting and empty storage footprint
- Material suitability for moisture, hygiene and outdoor exposure
- Compatibility with freight, export and site compliance requirements
Build freight protection into the packing process
Material handling equipment and cargo care products should work as a system. A correctly rated pallet still needs a stable load. A strong pallet bin still needs to be stacked within its design limits. An IBC still needs appropriate containment and handling controls. Dunnage bags still need suitable voids and sound load contact points.
Set packing standards that identify the correct pallet or bin, maximum load height, wrapping or strapping requirements, corner protection where needed and cargo restraint method. Photographing approved load patterns can help warehouse teams repeat the process consistently, particularly across multiple shifts or sites.
For export, review the full chain rather than only the warehouse stage. A load may be handled several times, exposed to vibration, temperature changes, humidity and extended transit periods. Equipment that is adequate for local delivery may not be adequate for containerised international freight.
Purchase for certainty, not just unit price
Trade buyers need clear product specifications, available stock and a practical path for larger orders. Where requirements are recurring, standardising a small range of approved equipment can simplify procurement and reduce handling errors. It also makes it easier to train staff and forecast replacement needs.
